15 days in 1979...

Found another "gem" amongst Gran's recipes. This one is really sad though...

My godfather(and uncle) worked for the National Parks Board(SANparks) and below is an invoice made out to him on 15/11/1979. I cannot make out what it was for, but the amount was R8.80.

15 days later on 30/11/1979 he died in a car accident in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park(now called the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park)

I was 3 years old at the time and can't remember him all that well, but I still remember how sad my gran was. Until her death in 1999, she mourned his death. Wonder why she kept it between her recipes...

Ancient recipes

Last year my mother gave me a file filled with grandma's old recipes. Some of them have been ripped from old Huisgenoot magazines and Die Burger. The oldest one came from a Huisgenoot dated 1984! Half of the recipes are hand written, scattered with oil and flour marks, and according to my mother some are close to 60 years old.

I am busy sorting all of it and want to scan and print the hand written ones before they forever fade away.

Ancient recipes

Some of the pieces of paper have methods on them, but no recipe name. Wish grandma was still with us to tell me what it was supposed to be!

No-name recipes
Today I started sorting them and I think an afternoon nap might be a good idea. Not even halfway there.

How's your day going thus far?

Agent de Goede: In a different time...

This may sound very weird, but since I can remember, true crime, secret agents, undercover operations, serial killers, snipers, crime scene investigation, criminal psychology and forensics have been of huge interest to me. Nothing perplexes me more than trying to figure out what makes a serial killer tick. Or why someone can kill without feeling remorse. And even more interesting, the investigations after the murders.

In 1993, I met an undercover policemen and the poor man was bombarded with questions. Of course he was not allowed to tell me of his operations, but he did tell me that at the time he was investigating criminal activities in the Cape Town harbour. What is scary about this, is that a year later, this group found out that he was an "infiltrator" and phoned him one day to say that they know where he lives and that they know his fiance gets home at such and such time... Scary shit. He eventually left the SAPS to open his own business and was killed 6 years ago in what seemed like a cash in transit heist. He was shot in the back. The killers are still roaming the streets...

I seriously considered the Police college, but a lot of people, including my friend, persuaded me not to. Today I am sorry that I did not follow my passion. Would have loved to be called "Agent or Sersant de Goede".

Had to settle for the Crime & Investigation channel on DSTV and books like the ones below:

Skermunkil it's pretty!

In December Vicki from I Want That had a series of "24 days of Give and Take" on her blog. She featured some very talented bloggers/artists who let us in on their charity of choice and also gave away something that they make. I was the lucky winner of a Skermunkil pendant from the very talented Marietjie of Eendag op 'n reendag.

Look what arrived yesterday...

This year I am definitely going to make a plan and start supporting more charities.
Any ideas?
